omschrijvingS-bar hilted sword owned by Captain W. Holt active E1803-1838. The hilt consists of a gilt metal- five-bar guard (variation) with anchor cartouche- a flat cap pommel and a reeded ivory grip. Blade is a curved falchion. The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass lockets- rings- and chape. The top locket also has a frog stud. Inscribed inside the guard is 'Bequeathed by Captain W Stewart RN to Lt. W Holt RN July 1814'. The hilt is stamped 'FT' (Francis Thurkle). This sword is part of the Spinney collection (OP46) which in total includes sixteen swords- five dirks and three pistols (AAA3114 (pair) and 3115. William Holt entered the Navy in 1803 as a Volunteer. He was present at the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807 where he was in command of a rocket boat. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1810 and served with Captain Stewart (who bequeathed him this sword) on board the sloop Blossom in 1811. He was promoted Commander in 1824 and Captain in 1838.
