The obverse of the blade is inscribed with a floral scroll- with cap of Liberty- eagle clasping an olive (?) branch in its left claws- and in its right a bundle of arrows- across its chest a shield with stripes- and eleven stars. From its beak issues a ribbon with floral additions bearing the motto 'ELPLURIBUS UNUM'- floral scrolls. Inscibed on the reverse is leaf/ tree decoration- foul anchor- floral scroll and cap of Liberty. On both obverse and reverse of the blade- there is evidence of a gold strip that originally ran up either side of the blade.
