omschrijving | 'Naval officer's sword made for the American market ca1810. British manufacture. Hilt consists of an uptilted eagle-head pommel-e without a back-piece and a fluted ivory grip. The stirrup hilt is pierced for a sword knot and has a disc finial to the quillon. There are embossed langets bearing a foul anchor. Much of the gilding remains on the blade- and there is quite extensive blueing. It is a straight blade- with a flat-back and broad shallow fuller running along its length. The scabbard is missing. The obverse of the blade is inscribed with a floral scroll- with cap of Liberty- eagle clasping an olive (?) branch in its left claws- and in its right a bundle of arrows- across its chest a shield with stripes- and eleven stars. From its beak issues a ribbon with floral additions bearing the motto 'ELPLURIBUS UNUM'- floral scrolls. Inscibed on the reverse is leaf/ tree decoration- foul anchor- floral scroll and cap of Liberty. On both obverse and reverse of the blade- there is evidence of a gold strip that originally ran up either side of the blade.
