omschrijvingPeruvian sword. The hilt consists of a gilt brass solid half-basket guard with raised bars and badge of the Peruvian Navy - a foul anchor surmounted by a sun 'in splendour'- the whole surrounded by a wreath. There is a lion's-head pommel and back-piece and a white fish-skin grip. A swordknot is attached. Blade is straight steel- flat-backed and slender. There is a black leather scabbard with two gilt brass lockets and rings. A foul anchor surmounted by a sun is embossed on mid locket. Gilt brass chape with ornamental shoe. The obverse of the blade is inscribed with 'THOMAS LYONS' and the reverse with 'J STARKEY/23/CONDUIT STREET/LONDON'. It is etched with foliage decoration and an anchor below a sun. This sword conforms with the uniform regulations of the Peruvian Navy published in 1905. The sword cutler- J Starkey & Co- was in business at 23 Conduit Street between 1856-1914 so this sword can be dated between 1905-1914.
