| omschrijving | Danish dirk- the hilt of the dirk consists of a straight- gilt brass cross-guard- which has an indentation on each side at the cross and ball finials. The pommel is made in the form of a turned- slightly domed knob. The gilt brass ferrule is decorated with two pairs of threads. Below the ferrule are two encircling bands. The turned cream-coloured plastic grip- swells at its mid-point to include four bands- which encircle it. These bands are larger than those below the ferrule.
The nickel-plated steel blade is straight- of rectangular section through the 33mm shoulder- and of flattened diamond section thereafter. The reverse of the blade is etched- at the shoulder- with the words 'E.B.S. Solingen'- which is probably a town mark rather than the mark of a particular maker. The solid gilt brass scabbard is plain on the reverse and heavily embossed on the obverse. Two rings are fitted very close together at the back near the top of the scabbard. From throat to bottom at the tip- the decoration consists of a lion's mask- the arms of Denmark superimposed on a military trophy consisting of swords- spears and colours- a foul anchor- rococo foliage and scrolls and an acanthus spray motif.
The dirk is of the general type introduced in the 1860's and still worn today in the Royal Danish Navy. The dirk used by the Royal Hellenic Navy was modelled on this type of dirk.
