omschrijvingAmerican Confederate Navy Sword. The hilt consists of a gilt brass solid half basket guard with embossed foliage and within an oval- a foul anchor over two guns in saltire. The pommel is a gilt brass dolphin's head with scaly back-piece. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three copper wires and the blade is slightly curved and flat-backed. The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass lockets and a chape. The scabbard can be accessed via the WHOLE/PART toggle. The blade is engraved with the Confederate flag (1861-63) superimposed on the foul anchor. The foul anchor is also engraved with 'CHARLESTON S.C' and at the shoulder 'COURTI....NT'. The maker of this sword was Mole of Birmingham who made a fair number of bladed weapons for the Confederacy during the wars between the states. Courtney and Tennant of Charleston imported many of Mole's products.
