omschrijving1804 pattern cutlass. Cutlasses- boarding axes and pikes formed part of the weaponry of the ship’s company- being distributed from stores before an engagement. The first regulation cutlass appeared about 1804. A robust weapon- it had a long straight blade and a black iron double disc hilt. James Spratt- master’s mate on board the ‘Defiance’ at Trafalgar wrote a spirited account of the hand-to-hand fighting- ‘..a Granadier from the starboard gangway with fixed bayonet thought to run me through but I parried his thrust with my blade- he then retired a little loading his piece at my breast which I struck down with my trusty old friend the cutlass…’.
