omschrijvingStraight bladed dirk- the hilt of the dirk consists of an embossed gilt crosspiece and a lion's head pommel. The dirk has a tapered ivory grip- decorated with turned rings. The straight steel blade has a diamond section. The obverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'E &E EMANUEL 101 High St Portsmouth & 3 Hard Portsea'- along with a crown over a foul anchor motif- and arched decoration. The reverse of the blade is engraved with the same decoration- but has oak leaves in place of the words. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets- with rings- and chape- which are engraved with lines. E. & E. Emanuel the sword makers had branches at 101- High Street- Portsmouth and at 3- The Hard- Portsea. E. & E. Emanuel did not open their High Street- Portsmouth branch until 1855 so this dirk will not have been made before then. The dirk was probably sold in 1856 when dirks were reintroduced and before the new pattern had become known. This type of straight-bladed dirk is shown in illustrations as having been worn by volunteers (later Naval Cadets) between 1830-1846.
