omschrijvingThis pattern of sword was introduced into the French navy around 1800 and has a straight stirrup hilt in gilt metal- a fluted pommel and an ebony grip. The end of the quillon (the extended crosspiece of the hilt of a sword- usually straight but sometimes curved) is decorated with a lion’s head and the langets (the two small extensions of the guard on which there is often engraved a badge or motif) are embossed with a foul anchor. It is said to have been surrendered to Captain Thomas Fremantle when he was in command of the ‘Neptune’ at Trafalgar by Captain J-J. Magendie of the ‘Bucentaure’. The ‘Bucentaure’ was the flagship of Admiral Villeneuve whom Fremantle entertained on board the ‘Neptune’ after the battle- writing to his wife- ‘I found him a very pleasant and Gentlemanlike man- the poor man was very low!’.
