omschrijving | Lloyds Patriotic Fund £50 presentation sword- which belonged to Captain Samuel Mallock (died 1845). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt quillon- which is shaped like a Roman fascis- the guard meeting this at right angles and made in the form of a Hercules club. A snake is entwined around the club- and it is attached to a loop in the mouth of the lion's head- which forms the pommel. The sword has a gilt lion's head pommel and back-piece. The ivory grip is diamond knurled. There is a rectangular plaque at the base of the grip- which is decorated with a group in relief depicting a cannon- an anchor and a trident. The sword has triangular langets- which are decorated in relief with a floral pendant. The sword comes complete with a sword knot.
The polished steel blade has been damascened in blue and gold and is decorated with foliage- a rose- a thistle and a shamrock motif. The blade is also decorated with a crown surmounting the monogram 'GR' contained within a wreath and a palm branch- the figure of Hope and her anchor- naval trophies- a globe surrounded by flags and guns. The blade bears the inscription 'From the Patriotic Fund at Lloyds to Lieut S Mallock of the Royal Marines for his energy and gallantry at the storming Fort Mudros on the coast of Spain on the 4th June 1805- by a party of seamen and marines from HMS Loire- as recorded in the London Gazette of the 22nd of the same month'. The sword comes complete with a scabbard.
Captain Samuel Mallock (died 1845) was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant- Royal Marines in 1792. He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in 1805- to Adjutant in 1805 and to the rank of Captain in 1825. He retired as a Captain in 1835 and died in July 1845.
