omschrijvingSolid half-basket hilted sword- which belonged to Honorary Lieutenant Sidney Crowley (active 1882-1905)- Royal Naval Artillery Volunteer. The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt solid half-basket guard- with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is a folding flap on the inside of the guard with a hole to engage the stud in the top locket. The sword has a lion's-head pommel. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The sword knot consists of blue and gold rope with a blue and gold tassel with blue and gold threads. The Wilkinson pattern steel blade is straight- flat-backed with a double-edged spear point. The blade bears the words 'Royal Naval' then a foul anchor followed by the words 'Artillery Volunteers'- followed by the words 'Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall'- followed by the Royal cipher 'VR' below a crown- and the number '27769'. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and chape. Wilkinson sold the sword to Honorary Lieutenant Sidney Crowley in January 1877. Honorary Lieutenant Sidney Crowley (active 1882-1905) was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Artillery Volunteer in 1882 and to the rank of Honorary Lieutenant in 1889. He was last mentioned in the Navy List of 1905.
