omschrijvingSporting rifle. The stock is possibly made of walnut. The underside of the butt is curved in a way reminiscent of early 18th century longarms. Fully stocked to muzzle with a cap of yellow ivory at the end. Small carved cheek piece on left of the butt. Trigger guard of plain brass with close resemblance to that fitted to the Baker rifle. Three brass ramrod pipes and heavy iron ramrod. Flat brass butt plate. It has a flintlock sidelock. The barrel is browned and of octagonal external section. Rifled with nine grooves- right hand twist. No rearsight and the brass foresight is possibly a later addition as it has been rather crudely fitted into a roughly morticed groove. The calibre is 0.7in. Inscribed on the lockplate is the name 'D EGG'. Inscribed on the barrel is 'D EGG LONDON'- and on the butt 'MA 1309' (Museum of Artillery) also 'II.C.R'. In 1859 a system of reserve weapons was set up and divided into four classfications: I-IV according to the type- age and condition of a weapon and whether or not it had been officially refurbished. The arm was accordingly stamped on the right side of the butt with ICR; IICR; IIICR and IVCR.
