| omschrijving | Sporting rifle. The stock is half stocked and possibly made of walnut. Pronounced pistol grip effect bound with silver wire and edged with silver studs which have round heads. Chequered decoration from pistol grip to fore-end of stock. Two sling loops attached to butt and barrel. The lock is bolt operated above a magazine. The barrel is rifled. Fitted with barleycorn foresight on extended ramp. Fixed two leaf backsight with 'V' apertures. The back leaf folds flat. The front leaf graduated 80-200 yards and the back leaf graduated to 300 yards. The calibre is 0.303in. Inscribed on the barrel is '267 gG. B.P.' over 'St.mG'. The number '2' is inscribed on the stock. There are two crowns inscribed on the bolt handle- and on the action the letter 'S' over a crown can be seen. This rifle is a sporting arm based on the action of the German Model 88 Commission rifle and was developed by the German Military Rifle Testing Commission at Spandau Arsenal. This example- with its simple sporting stock and lack of double 'set' triggers- may indicate that it was aimed at the English/African market rather than the Middle European hunter who tended to prefer set triggers and more exotic woodwork. The 'butterknife' bolt handle appears to be identical to that fitted on the 88 cavalry carbine.
