omschrijvingSpanish miquelet pistol owned by Captain Thomas Wells (d.1825). The stock is walnut- fully stocked with ornate brass mounts. The rounded decorated brass butt cap bears in the centre a silver female head. A silver female head is set in the brass escutcheon; another is set in the brass trigger guard- and a fourth set on the left side of the pistol by lock screws. The pistol is fitted with a belt hook. A ramrod is fitted in shield type brass mount. The barrel is of brass- octagonal at breech changing to circular- engraved with scroll work. There is a miquelet lock which is lightly engraved. The calibre is 0.5in. There is a label attached to the pistol that reads 'Spanish Flintlock pistol - With 4 Silver bosses of head of Queen Isabella of Spain Taken from Captain of Town Guard by Capt Thomas Wells'. The pistol was acquired with the following items: a pair of epaulettes- a dress sword (WPN1512)- a dirk (WPN1513)- a scimitar (WPN1514)- a Nile medal and a bronze medallion of Napoleon. Thomas Wells was promoted to Lieutenant in 1795 and to Commander in 1808 when he was commanding the sloop HMS 'Cruiser'. In 1811 he commanded the sloop HMS 'Phipps' and in 1812 captured the French privateer 'Le Cerf'. He later that year assisted in the recapture of HMS 'Apelles'. Captain Wells died in 1825.
