omschrijvingThe pistols are half-stocked in walnut inlaid with silver wire scroll work and fitted with a grotesque mask of silver over the butt. There is an oval silver escutcheon plate on which is engraved a family crest. All other parts of the pistols are of steel. The locks are boxlock- flintlocks mounted centrally with a flashguard to the rear of the pan- in the centre of which is the vent and a sliding safety catch to the rear of the cock which will engage at both full and half cock positions. There is a solid backward curl trigger. The 'box' is engraved both sides with foliated scrolls and a ribbon on which appears the name and town of maker. the barrel unscrews rather less than 25mm in front of the steel. The breech part is chambered and carries the thread. Underneath the breech end of the barrel itself is a recangular lug to facilitate the removal of the barrel for loading. The calibre is approximately 0.6in. The pistols are inscribed on the left side of the lock with 'COLLIS'- and on the right 'OXFORD'. The butt mask bears Birmingham marks for 1777-78. The pistols are in a mahogany case containing a powder flask- a ball mould- a patch cutter- screw driver- a ramrod and a leather wallet containing two spare flints. The box is lined with green baize and has two internal wooden fittings together with a turnable wooden key to secure the pair of pistols. The box is inscribed on the outside 'Thomas Troubridge RN/to/Thomas Masterman Hardy RN' and on the inside 'PAIR OF PISTOLS BY COLLIS OF OXFORD/ENGRAVED WITH THE TROUBRIDGE CREST- COMPLETE/WITH ACCESSORIES IN FITTED MAHOGANY CASE/PRESENTED BY/ADMIRAL SIR THOMAS TROUBRIDGE/TO/CAPTAIN MASTERMAN HARDY'. These pistols were popular from circa 1750-1760 but as the butt mask- which looks original- dates from 1777-1778- that date has been adopted. The escutcheon does not bear either the crest of Troubridge - on a wreath- a dexter arm embowed habited azure- cuffed argent holding a banner charged (with two keys) or that of Hardy - out of a naval coronet or a dragon's head proper. The engraved design shows a demi lion or (bear) rampant holding between its forepaws- a flower or bouquet. Hardy and Troubridge were friends but even so it is hard to see why Troubridge should have given Hardy an old pair of pistols as neither came to prominence until 20 years after these pistols were made. The fittings of the case are certainly not original.
