omschrijving | Flintlock pistol- fully stocked to the muzzle and fitted with a brass trigger guard with a vase-shaped forward finial- a brass sideplate and a ramrod pipe. The pistol has a brass butt cap. The lock is a flintlock- but it is almost entirely missing. The pistol has an iron barrel of circular section with an iron tang. The calibre is 0.55in. The pistol was allegedly found on the ship 'St Matthias' sunk in St Mary's Creek- Chatham. An entry from the catalogue of the Royal Naval exhibition of 1891 states '3341 Pistol found in a ship which was discovered in St Mary's Creek- Chatham and which is supposed to be the St Mathias sunk during the descent made by the Dutch on Chatham'. The 'St Mathias' was a Dutch Fourth Rate burnt during the attack on Chatham in 1667.
