omschrijving | A dramatic sketch of a seascape painted from the deck of the Greek-owned steamer, 'Penaglis M. Hadoulis'. Everett sailed in her from Cardiff, Wales, to Montevideo, Uruguay, and back between December 1931 and March 1932. Looking towards the empty horizon, the artist has drawn particular attention to the vast expanse of sea through a series of strong diagonal rhythmic lines of waves. With vivid colour combinations he has concentrated on the light effects in the sky, with the sun creating the varied patterning of the clouds. The lemon yellow reflection on the water connects the sea and the sky and Everett contrasts the darker blue of the sea against the paler sky and pink of the clouds. The effect is both calm and contemplative amidst the vast emptiness of the ocean. Everett produced hundreds of similar rapid seascapes done on the spot, sometimes painted in quick succession. He was intent upon capturing the relationship and fleeting nature of light and the movement of waves in an ever-changing sea. It is inscribed 'PMH'.
