omschrijvingCreamware butter dish and cover of a similar pattern to a service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), later used as an inkwell and pen tray. It is in the form of a tray with a lidded oval container in the centre. The tray, container and lid are all painted with borders of oak leaves and acorns. There are swags of blue ribbon with inscriptions at either end of the tray and lid 'Nelson', 'the San Josef', '14th Feby' (the battle of Cape St Vincent) and 'Nelson', 'the Glorious 1st of August', 'Aboukir' (the battle of the Nile). In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern are referred to as the 'Baltic Set'.
