omschrijvingDutch delftware plate commemorating the battle of Dogger Bank, 1781. Hand painted in blue with a Dutch ship, sails furled, wearing an ensign coloured red, white and blue with similarly coloured pennants on all three masts. There are two other vessels in the distance. Inscribed in cursive script: 'Doe op de doggers Bank den parkerop kwarn daagen/Zoutman hem stout bevogt en dapper Heelt geslaagen.' (When Parker showed upon the Dogger Bank Zoutman fought him bravely and soundly beat him off.) The inscription is in Frisian dialect rather than in standard Dutch. A plaited pattern is painted on the border.
