omschrijving | Earthenware jug commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) and Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith (1764-1840). It is transfer-printed in black and hand-painted in bright over-glaze enamels: blue, yellow and red. On one side a portrait of Nelson in a uniform with red facings and a sash with a foul anchor. Inscription above: 'HERE'S TO OUR OLD FRIEND, AND SUCCESS TO THE PEACE MAKERS' below 'LORD NELSON'. On the other side a warship under sail wearing an ensign with a central yellow cross, quartered blue, red, red blue. Inscribed below 'Sr Sidney Smith Embarking on Board the Tiger of 74 Guns after Defeating Bonapartte (sic) at Dacre.' The jug has yellow and black bands around the rim. Below the lip are painted the letters 'SLO' within a wreath.
