omschrijving | Interior of the passenger liner 'Omrah' (1899) showing the central area of the First Class Dining Saloon, on the Upper Deck (a view from the port side, looking aft).
The Baroque-style Saloon was panelled in rosewood and mahogany, inlaid with patterns in satinwood and orangewood. This photograph shows the well rising up to a glass dome on the Boat Deck. The cove around the bottom allowed more light to spread from above. The swivel chairs were bolted to the floor to avoid movement during rough weather; they were a standard feature of ships’ restaurants until the First World War.
