omschrijvingThis heavy gun-sighting telescope has a brass barrel and fittings. There are focusing and magnification rings at the eyepiece end. The body has been damaged by shot. The maker’s name is inscribed beneath the magnification scale. The sight came from HMS ‘Warspite’ and was used at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, when it was damaged. HMS ‘Warspite’ was a battleship launched in 1913 and heavily damaged during the Battle of Jutland. After the war she served in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic Fleets and was rebuilt in 1934-37, served throughout World War II and was broken up in 1946. It obtained the largest number of battle honours in World War II including: Jutland 1916, Atlantic 1939, Narvik 1940, Norway 1940, Calabria 1940, Mediterranean 1940-43, Matapan 1941, Crete 1941, Malta Convoys 1941, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Normandy 1944, Walcheren 1944, English Channel 1944, and Biscay 1944.
