omschrijving | Terrestrial floor globe. It forms a pair with the celestial globe, Newton GLB0090. Geographical details on the sphere show the location of the 'Antipodes of London'. There is a note on Cook's death near 'Karakakooa B: Here Cap.t Cook was killed by the Natives 14 Feb.Y 1779'. There are four areas with notes on discoveries, including, for example, in the north polar area 'Cherry Island of Barentz 1596', in northwest America, 'Explored by Capt.n Franklin 1827' and in the south pole region 'L. of Alexander 1st 1821'. There are nine islands in the oceans with a label on their discovery, for example, 'Is. of Juan Fernandez (disc.d 1563)', 'Columbus I. 1809' and 'I. Grande of La Roche, doubtful 1675'. The tracks of Cook's three voyages are extensively labelled with dates and followed by Clerke, Gore and 'Biscoe 1830, 1832'. A total of eight ocean names are given. The London area on the globe has been damaged by frequent use. For full details about the cartography and construction of this globe please refer to the related publication.
